Three Crows – The starting point for this photo animation is the Finnish folk song and children’s song ”Kolme varista” (Three Crows). The original, simple story of the song takes on a surreal and absurd form in the new verses I have written, as the crow and the reality surrounding it are described from a physics perspective.
The work depicts the complexity, fascination, and fantastical nature of physical reality, which appears simple at first glance. Where does a crow fly, and how does it stay together when viewed at the molecular, atomic, or quantum level?
In his works, Pasi Autio examines his surroundings and everyday reality, reflecting on their relationship to the inner world of the mind and imagination. He often combines photographic video imagery with a carefully constructed soundscape, and finds humorous aspects even in serious subjects. In recent years, Autio has been interested in the rhythm and musicality of birdsong, and his work Feel The Heat (2022) and his Bird Disco events with Saku Koistinen have gotten people dancing to the “tweet-tweet beat”. In his earlier works, Autio has explored themes such as humanity’s unequal relationship with the ecosystem, the connection between mind and body, loneliness, temporality, and death.
